Barry Bonds indicted on perjury charges

Barry Bonds, baseball’s record home run hitter, was indicted Thursday by a federal grand jury on perjury and obstruction of justice charges.

The indictment charges Barry Bonds with lying when he said he didn’t knowingly take steroids.

A federal grand jury in San Francisco returned a five count indictment against Bonds charging four counts of perjury and one count of obstruction of justice.

“I’m surprised,” said John Burris, one of Bonds’ attorneys, who told The Associated Press, “there’s been an effort to get Barry for a long time.”

“I’m curious what evidence they have now they didn’t have before.” Burris did not know of the indictment before being alerted by The Associated Press. He told AP he would immediately call Bonds to notify him. The indictment charges Bonds with lying when he said he didn’t knowingly take steroids given to him by his personal trainer, Greg Anderson.

He also denied taking steroids at any time in 2001 when he was pursuing the single-season home run record. “During the criminal investigation, evidence was obtained including positive tests for the presence of anabolic steroids and other performance-enhancing substances for Bonds and other athletes,” the indictment reads. He is also charged with lying that Anderson never injected him with steroids.

President Bush, a former baseball team owner who has spoken against steroid use, is “very disappointed to hear this,” said White House spokesman Tony Fratto. “As this case is now in the criminal justice system, we will refrain from any further specific comments about it. But clearly this is a sad day for baseball.”

  1. Instead of raking our citizens over the coals, use the energy to boot the 12 million illegal aliens. I don’t care if Bonds took steroids and hit the ball too many times. I care about all the lawbreaking sanctuary cities hiding the illegal aliens. San Francisco is number one on the list. It is a sick city.

  2. He needs his HR record taken from him. He did not get them legitimately. He seems to think he is above any sort of rules or regulations. BOO ON BARRY!

  3. I could really care less about baseball — I guess this other guy who can’t seem to make up his mind about the Yankees (?) — AROD? - is being preened for the Babe’s replacement although he is over half thru his “careerr” if not more — But really, Bush, Cheney shredding the constitution, Eric Prince lying to Congress about Blackwater, Harriet Myers in Contempt of Congress — and we don’t have anythign better to do with our legal system than to determine if Barry Bonds took steroids? Let’s see, maybe next we should exhume the Babe to see what kind of drugs he had in his system — I understand he was quite the drunk and was known to play on many “speedball” type of drugs. Too bad Barry was born black, all I can say.

  4. I totally agree with you C Morse, I was really happy when Mark Ecko opened up voting to the public and the fate of Barry’s home run baseball was sealed.

  5. This is an outrage. How far have we gone in this “free” America when people tell you what you can and cannot put in your body.

  6. There are laws about what you are and are not allowed to put into your body, which might be a little strange. It is your body. But you are not given the rights to do what you want with your body (e.g. cocaine is illegal to put into your body).

As for Barry, nobody said he couldn’t put the steroids in his body. The rule was either you can not compete in professional baseball or you could not let anyone know you are using if you are playing in professional baseball (other players use, you just don’t hear about them, yet). Barry lied about things he should not have instead of just saying “Ya, I use steroids. Look at the size of my body, the size of my muscles, the increased size of my head. Duh!”
