177 have been confirmed dead with another 150 injured after a stampede in a Hindu temple in northern India.
With a massive population of over 1.1 billion and an aging infrastructure stampedes are not uncommon in India. In 2005 265 were killed in another temple, and 145 died last month outside a temple in northern India.
Witnesses gave different accounts of the events leading up to the stampede. Some claimed there were people shouting bomb, others that measures taken to cordon off access for a VIP guest led to the rush.
The local police chief claimed the event started as authorities put up a barricade and people began running downhill away from the temple.
Authorities are promising a full investigation into the deadly stampede.
