Villagers dig homemade tunnel through mountain
|
Villagers of a remote village in China spent five years digging excavated by hand.
To get to the nearby town in Shiyan city villagers had to traverse treacherous mountain trails that claimed several lives a year.
The village leader Wen Changfa said, “We had to dig out a tunnel for the village’s survival.”
The direct distance was only five miles, but it used to take at least half a day for villagers to reach the city in order to sell field produce and buy necessities.”
The tunnel is 6 feet high and 6 feet wide in most places and was excavated by hammers. Villagers would occasionally be able to save up and use small amounts of explosives.
The trip to Shiyan that used to take a day and a half along narrow mountain passes now takes only about an hour and a half.
