Airplane bathroom trip may land passenger in wheelchair for life
|
McALLEN, Texas — A 47-year-old woman was paralyzed while using the bathroom on a flight from Houston early Saturday morning.
The Continental passenger suffered a fractured neck and rushed to the hospital where doctors spent six hours attempting to repair the damage.
The midair bathroom accident left the woman paralyzed from the chest down.
The Continental 737 was on descent to McAllen when it experienced turbulence.
The seatbelt signs were apparently illuminated when the airplane suddenly descended and with the woman in the bathroom where she apparently struck the ceiling.
Doctors said some patients are able to recover from this sort of accident but the prognosis for her was uncertain.
The woman whose name is being withheld for privacy reasons is breathing with the help of a ventilator.

Keep up the good work.
I’m blind and have a spinal cord injury myself that sounds like it’s about the same level as this woman’s. I wonder though why people decide to go to the washroom at that time? The seatbelt signs were on and they were already descending. Couldn’t she wait until she was in the airport or have gone before the seatbelt signs were turned on?
Or was she already in there before this happened?
