A guy’s night out can include many things, in the case of an Indianapolis man that meant a strip club. To his 5-year-old son, that meant watching cartoons. Everything sounds acceptable, unless the man leaves his son in the cab of his semi-truck in order to make it happen.

The 39-year-old man was arrested at 1:15am on Tuesday, charged with child neglect and public intoxication.

There wouldn’t have been any problems if the drunk man didn’t call the police reporting his truck stolen. The truck wasn’t stolen, it was actually parked in the parking lot but the man was too drunk to find the truck.

When police opened the truck they found the son watching cartoons.

The mom/wife of the guys came to the rescue and bailed out the man while picking up the son.

Celebrity chef Paula Dean was hit with a ham while trying to do a good deed, helping to unload 25,000 pounds of donated meat for an Atlanta food bank. Not wanting to show she’s afraid of the same meat she’s been made famous by cooking, she continued to help unload.

Paula tweeted about the incident, saying that “I haven’t met the ham that could stop me yet!” Obviously this means she’s never had swine flu.

While helping to unload a delivery truck, Paula threw a ham to someone who yelled “Back at ya” and then threw the ham back. The action was meant to be without malice, but being hit by a ham still has the same lasting effect.

According to a study from Spain, cigarette smoking can act as a precipitating factor for headaches, specifically migraines. Furthermore, this investigation of 361 medical students at the University of Salamanca found that smokers have more frequent migraine attacks and that smoking more than 5 cigarettes a day can trigger this headache.

In the study, 16% of all students fulfilled migraine criteria and 20% of all students were smokers. However, the percentage of migraineurs who smoked was greater (29%) and migraine frequency in those who were both migraine sufferers and smokers was higher than in those who were nonsmoking migraine sufferers. Therefore smoking clearly seems to be a precipitating factor for this type of headache and there also was a direct relationship between the number of cigarettes consumed and the frequency of migraine attacks, with migraines typically provoked by smoking more than 5 daily cigarettes. Although a greater percentage of students with migraines smoked, they actually smoked less than those who did not suffer migraines; apparently, the migraineurs knew they were more likely to have an attack if they exceeded the 5 cigarette limit, so the prospect of pain was a self-limiting factor.

A South African information technology company on Wednesday proved it was faster for them to transmit data with a carrier pigeon than to send it using Telkom , the country’s leading internet service provider.

Internet speed and connectivity in Africa’s largest economy are poor because of a bandwidth shortage. It is also expensive.

Local news agency SAPA reported the 11-month-old pigeon, Winston, took one hour and eight minutes to fly the 80 km (50 miles) from Unlimited IT’s offices near Pietermaritzburg to the coastal city of Durban with a data card was strapped to his leg.

Including downloading, the transfer took two hours, six minutes and 57 seconds — the time it took for only four percent of the data to be transferred using a Telkom line.

SAPA said Unlimited IT performed the stunt after becoming frustrated with slow internet transmission times.

The company has 11 call-centers around the country and regularly sends data to its other branches.

Telkom could not immediately be reached for comment.

Internet speed is expected to improve once a new 17,000 km underwater fiber optic cable linking southern and East Africa to other networks becomes operational before South Africa hosts the soccer World Cup next year.

Local service providers are currently negotiating deals for more bandwidth.

Most of those following the Kolkata Open chess competition will inevitably remember Vladislav Tkachiev for the ‘doze-after-overdose’ act.

Even otherwise, the Russian settled in France after a stopover in Kazakhstan doesn’t conform to the average Indian’s idea of the staid world of chess.

His love for alcohol is as well known as his profound talent, he is hardly seen without a cigarette when he is not playing, his fascination for the blitz form —what T20 is to cricket —once led him to say “blitz changes reality…the light seems brighter and beer tastes sweeter” and he had initiated a ‘chess beauty contest’ with brother Evgeny. Lack of funds shut down the venture within a year after inception, in 2006.

Tkachiev is turning up in dark glasses after the drunken third-round forfeiture on Thursday. As he spoke about the aborted beauty contest, the stubble on his face turned golden in the fading light giving him the look of a true maverick.

“The idea was to show that women who play chess are not just intelligent. They are sexy, beautiful and why not have a contest to find out the best. Another important reason was to make the game popular by bringing it out of its boring confines,” Tkachiev told HT.

According to their plans, women chess players would send ‘offbeat’ photographs of themselves to be posted on the contest’s website.

They received about 400 entries with WGMs Natalija Pogonina, Maria Manakova and Almira Skripchenko amomg them. Tkachiev said there were a few Indians too, but couldn’t recall the names.

“We had planned an awards gala with $10,000 for the winner… There were no sponsors, we couldn’t sustain it.”

The contest drew criticism but WGM Anna Zuzulia, representing Belgium in the Kolkata Open, said she was okay with the idea.

“Most people think women chess players wear glasses and are abnormal. That’s not the case.”

Tkachiev has moved on in life. He seems to know that not everyone appreciates everything he does and accepts it with a witty smile. “What happened that day?” someone asked. “I lost,” came the amused answer after a pause.

According to the Madeira Beach, Florida sheriff’s office, beachgoers were concerned for the safety of Keith until they were pelted with sea creatures.

Marriott was arrested and charged with disorderly intoxication and carrying a concealed weapon. The weapon wasn’t a sea urchin, but was a pocketknife.

Being held on $250 bond is enough to keep the drunk jellyfish thrower out of jail.

A BBC film crew recording a program in an extinct volcano in Papua New Guinea has discovered a new species of giant woolly rat, a frog with fangs, and around 40 other exotic creatures unknown to science.

Dr George McGavin and his team of biologists were stunned to spot a new species of frog within a minute of setting foot from their helicopter on the rim of the crater of Mount Bosavi.

“It was mind-blowing,” said Dr McGavin, the head scientist of the BBC Natural History unit. “Allen Allison, a specialist in amphibians, said, ‘I think that’s one there over by your foot’. I nearly trod on it.”

The woolly rat, which measures nearly 3ft (82cm) in length and weighs more than 3lb (1.5kg), was captured on film in an infrared camera trap set up on the densely wooded slopes.

Provisionally named the Bosavi woolly rat, it is thought to live only in the crater and nowhere else in the world. It has no fear of humans.

“I had a cat and it was about the same size as this rat,” said Gordon Buchanan, the cameraman who first observed the creature.

Dr McGavin said the vegetarian rat was incredibly tame: “It just sat next to me nibbling on a piece of leaf. It won’t have seen a human before. The crater of Bosavi really is the lost world.”

The animal has a silver-brown coat of long, thick fur that probably helps it to survive the wet, cold winters inside the 1,000m high crater walls.

It is thought to belong to the rodent genus Mallomys, which contains other out-sized rat species including another giant woolly rat found in the Foja Mountains of Papua New Guinea by an expedition led by Conservation International in 2007.

Although the Bosavi rat is about five times the size of a brown rat of the genus Rattus that is familiar in Britain, it is dwarfed by other giant rodents elsewhere in the world, such as the South American capybara, which can reach 65kg.

Steve Greenwood, series producer for Lost Land of the Volcano, said that the team clambered down into the crater from the volcano’s 2,800m summit in January with the help of local trackers, and spent two weeks filming.

They suspect that they may have catalogued for the first time up to 40 new species, including 16 species of frog, at least three new species of fish, 20 species of insect and spider and one new species of bat.

They saw stick insects the length of a man’s forearm, an extremely hairy caterpillar that Dr McGavin hopes to name after Dennis Healey’s eyebrows, and butterfies the size of a paperback book.

“Highlights include a camouflaged gecko, a fanged frog and a fish called the Henamo Grunter, so named because it makes grunting noises from its swim bladder,” Mr Greenwood said.

Steve Backshall, a climber and naturalist, described how a Bosavi silky cuscus, a fruit-eating marsupial, climbed onto his shoulder.

“I can’t begin to describe how it feels to have an animal in my hands that in all probability has never before been seen by science,” he said.

“Most biologists would consider it a great achievement to name one new species but at some points on this trip it seemed like everything we were looking at was new. The end of every day was like a massive party. It was very special.”

A Shi’ite on death row in Saudi Arabia for the last 16 years for insulting the Prophet Mohammed was sentenced to another five years in jail for criticizing the Saudi justice system.

The verdict issued Monday punished Hadi al-Mutif for criticizing the justice system and the U.S.-allied absolute monarchy’s human rights record in comments he made from prison to U.S.-funded Alhurra television in 2007. Prisoners are often able to access mobile phones from visitors to Saudi jails.

“He said that he was a victim of sectarian segregation,” said Mohamed al-Askar, a leading Ismaili activist.

Mutif’s situation has become a rallying call for Ismailis, a minority within Shi’ism. Based in the Najran area bordering Yemen, the Ismailis say majority Sunnis are favored for jobs, housing and land and complain they cannot practice their rites openly.

Hamad al-Hoshan, a justice ministry spokesman, said he was not immediately able to comment about the case of Mutif, who has spent 16 of his 34 years in jail.

A report by New York-based Human Rights Watch (HRW) on Thursday said sectarian tensions were at their sharpest in years in Saudi Arabia, which follows Wahhabism, a puritanical form of mainstream Sunni Islam. Many Wahhabis see Shi’ites as heretics.

“All the Saudi Shia want is for their government to respect their identity and treat them equally,” said Sarah Leah Whitson, HRW Middle East and North Africa director, in a statement. “Yet Saudi authorities routinely treat these people with scorn and suspicion.”

The holy city of Medina saw clashes this year between Shi’ites and Sunni religious police, leading to protests in the Eastern Province where most Saudi Shi’ites live.

“The fact that they have not executed him for 16 years shows they are looking for a solution,” a Western diplomat in Riyadh said of Mutif’s case.

“It is not going to be easy for them, especially when you have some hardline Sunni clerics controlling courts,” he said.

“They must be coercive with clerics on this case because it has attracted a lot of international attention and there could be a political price even at home,” he said.

Last month King Abdullah ordered the release of 17 Ismailis jailed after clashes with police in 2000.

The king ordered a reform of the justice system two years ago, which if implemented would create an appeal court system and codify laws. Judges, who are Islamic legal scholars, have wide room for discretion in sentencing.

In Tampa, Florida some inmates have found a use for their time beyond just exercising and planning what they will do as their first felonious job when they get out of jail, in this case they are making their own hot sauce. Could the real hell’s kitchen be found in jail?

There are different varieties of the hot cause, including “Original,” “Smoke” and “No Escape”.

The recipes came to life in 2005 and has since been a minor success, selling over $10,000 in total, just $7.00 at a time.

Income generated is used to keep up the greenhouse and buy basic supplies to keep the business going, as everything is grown and processed in the jail.

I wonder if this is typical behavior for minimum-security jails like Hillborough County. Maybe Martha Stewart got her ideas from jail.
